Tournament Prep Information

USA Fencing Membership

Fencers are required to join USA Fencing to compete in sanctioned events. Orion Fencing is part off the Oregon Division. Fencers need a competitive membership, which is good for the USA Fencing season- from August 1 through July 31, 2023. Click here to register for a USA Fencing membership.

Event Registration

For USA Fencing (regional, sectional, and national) events, registration is found on the USA Fencing. Non-point events can be found on AskFred. Links to all recommended events for Orion Fencers will be shared here on our website and across our social media.

Tournament gear

Fencers will need a full uniform as well as two weapons and two of each wire to compete. Socks must reach up to the bottom of the knickers. We have a fair amount of equipment to lend, and are always willing to order more on request. Fencers should reach out to their coach at least one week before competition so we can do a full gear check and ensure everything is in proper working order for the event.

For those who are interested in purchasing gear of their own, we have a recommended gear list at the front desk, and we are happy to help fencers find and order the best gear to fit their needs and budget. Please remember that buying through Orion helps us maintain our club gear.

Age Groups

This age group classification chart is very thorough. Age groups are determined by birth year, and not by current age. Youth 10 (Y10) is anyone born in 2011-2014. Youth 12 (Y12) is anyone born in 2009-2012. Youth 14 (Y14) is anyone born in 2007-2010. Cadet is anyone born in 2002-2008. Junior is anyone born in 2002-2008. Open is anyone born 2008 or earlier.

TOURNAMENT COACHING FEES

In order for our coaches to support our fencers at as many tournaments as possible and to the fullest extent possible, we charge Tournament Coaching Fees. These fees vary based on the location of the tournament in question. For the sake of this explanation, prices are listed per fencer, per event, per tournament. D1A, DV2, VET, Y10, Y12, Y14, CDT, and JNR are all different events that may take place at the same Tournament.

For tournaments within 25 miles of Orion Fencing (Beaverton, Portland), Tournament Coaching Fees are $10 per fencer, per event, per tournament.

For tournaments within 150 miles of Orion Fencing (Seattle, Eugene, Olympia, Salem) Tournament Coaching Fees are $20 per fencer, per event, per tournament.

For tournaments within the continental United States but more than 150 miles away from Orion Fencing, Tournament Coaching Fees are $100 per fencer, per event, per tournament.

Tournament Coaching Fees must be paid prior to the tournament. Fencers are welcome to attend tournaments without having a coach at the ready to support them and offer advice as they compete, but must understand that during tournaments, the coaches from Orion are going to focus their attention on those fencers who have paid for their time and assistance.
